Is positive news always good? BP Energy’s review was headlined as Bouncing back

On the economic front, China is still our focus, with the FT reporting China tightening: end of the binge and the Economist highlighting changes with The end of cheap goods?

On a more positive note, news.com reported Wanted: See the boom jobs of the next 20 years.

That said, if you are looking at working in China or sending someone there, consider Working in East Asia: experience of the region becomes a vital asset

At the end of the day the HBR came out with this: What the West Doesn’t Get About China. Asian internal “business flow” is already much greater than that of the US – China “flow”

In Latin America, Brazil economy is now seen as Too hot by the Economist

Shortages continue to grow in our two-speed economy, consider these on Queensland, Queensland resources boom a workers’ drawcard and WA No quick fix to work skills issue

In the US this month, as in Australia, Immigration played centre stage with US immigration reported by the Financial Times.
Predictions are moving wider with Finance workers, electricians and engineers in demand over next five years: Report

On the global economy , frustration abounds with If You Have the Answers, Tell Me and The growing risks of our four-speed world

You might want to consider that Brazil and China: the ‘perfect match’ and the effect that might have on our economy.

That comment came this week from China in talks with Brazil over trade barriers

Earlier in the month Commodities see-saw after China tightening and India struggles to cap wage inflation

Finally, have a look at Chart of the Day: The Demographics of Social Media. Is it all hype?

There was good news in <a id="z56n" title="What Makes Nations Thrive?
We often think of Canada as a talent source. They have the same problems as us, with the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada reporting Petroleum Industry facing severe labour shortages.

Our trendline is highlighted with Average WA wages tipped to skyrocket .

On China and India you would want to read Bubbles and busts (and maybe Is China’s Real Estate Bubble Popping?) as well as Time to put the brakes on India’s dreams.

Recent news was mixed: U.S. Economic Growth Slows to 1.8% Rate in Quarter and the Atlantic explaining Snap Take: What Dampened GDP in the First Quarter?

In Europe, German unemployment falls below 3m was a highlight for us.

Skills Shortages Update, US product sales soar in China, Japan and Portugal

The Australian reported on our fast appearing skills shortage in Skills shortage could curb LNG industry growth: APPEA chief Belinda Robinson. The article suggests that Australia needs to improve education, in the meanwhile, its offshore we go!

Canada is in the same boat again, with Lots of jobs – no one to fill them reported in Ottawa.

How’s this for an interesting spin on things, the NYT time reported As China Grows, So Does Its Appetite for American-Made Products. Exports soared 32 % last year.

Older workers are growing in stature with the Economist reporting Age shall not wither them. Does that mean we’ll get better as we get older?

And as an update, Japan is still on the ropes with Before and after and Portugal is in trouble with Down goes another one

Finally, things must be getting better with ECB rate rise: arming for the future and Consumer Credit Rose in February the Fastest Since October 2008

In the US, things are better but as always with the press “the only news is bad news”, are reported in Recovery Blemished by Housing in January

I thought you would like to have a look at the graphs reported by the NYT. Consumer confidence is especially buoyant: Its on the right hand side o the Economics page NYT.

The US still has its problems with Graphs of the Day: How the Years Dulled America’s Innovation Edge being a real eye opener.

After all the news on the uprisings in North Africa I found these reports informative : Oil pressure rising, Should Crumbling Regimes Worry Investors ?and Blame Twitter for the increased oil prices

As always, and increasingly (yes, the demographics are still the same ) skills shortages abound. The SMH reported we are Ill-prepared for Asia

Finally, read this excellent self-development article from the Harvard Business Review: Nine Things Successful People Do Differently.

Just a reminder for those who coach their people.

Good News week

We are still getting good news from the US with Fed Forecasts Faster Growth as Economy Gathers Steam

Maybe we should consider Germany as a model to solve our manufacturing decline, with the Economist reporting A machine running smoothly

Their biggest problem is skills: As Germany Booms, It Faces a Shortage of Workers.

China has hit another milestone with the New Statemen reporting that China replaces Japan as world’s second largest economy.

There have been plenty of doom sayers with regards to China’s inflation problem, with the exception of the Economists Inflated fears

If we think the skills market will get easier, maybe we should think again with the Mackay Daily reporting Mackay to overcome skills shortage. What really scared me in the article was the increasing mining wages overseas that will reduce our competitiveness?

Alberta is working to solve their problems with Skills shortage prompts Alberta to changes apprentice ratio.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Cyclone Yasi.

Good news in the US

If you were looking for some good news today then the US is the place to be with a raft of good news.

The Altantic reported last week The Economic Recovery Gained Momentum in December along with the New York Times which commented U.S. Economy Grew at 3.2% Rate in the 4th Quarter and U.S. Consumer Spending Rose in December.

Yesterday, Dow and S.& P. Close at Highest Levels Since 2008

I think the best news is that consumer confidence is up in the US. CEO’s are also more confident, read here

An interesting position on the US economy was The Future of the Middle Class, a must read if your interested in the big picture.

News elsewhere was less hopeful with China Is Poised to Raise Rates Again, Bankers Say and PMI data raise fears on global inflation

The UK is on hard times with a The lean year

If you are in the coal industry, you might find Burning ambitions a good read.

Finally, Brazil is the place to go as a senior executive if your sole motivation is money. Pay rates are the best as reported in Top whack.
